political campaign ad project
instructions
Background: A way for all voters regardless of gender or skin color to participate in the political process, they need to research all the candidates. One way of doing that is observing political ads to see if it is enough to persuade them one way of another. These political ads require campaign cash for it to operate. The two major parties (Republicans and Democrats) are the parties with the most campaign cash. Therefore, they are the parties that have more exposure to the public than third parties. Third parties do run political ads but they have not been enough to make a difference at the national level. Even political party organizations create ads to advocate for an issue or a candidate. These ads assist presidential candidates in winning the nomination for the party. The ads assist them from getting to the national nomination convention of the party they are a part of.
Purpose: After completing this unit, we will now engage in a culminating project. For this project, students will have the option to choose any US presidential candidate in US history in order to create a political advertisement. There will be a sample list of candidates for students to choose from. The purpose of this political ad is to persuade the voters to vote for that presidential candidate. The candidate must be advertised like he/she is the best candidate for the job. Students need to emphasize the candidate's personality, career experience, accomplishments, plans for the country, etc. There should be at least two traits listed for each of the four. Group Procedures: Students will be randomly grouped in pairs. There should only be one presidential candidate per group. Each group will write their names next to the presidential candidate they choose. The list will be three sheets posted on the wall for students to write their name next to their choice. Every group will be given a tablet to create these political ads. Both students need to take turns every 5-10 minutes researching their candidate and editing the ad. While one student researches, the other student offers suggestions. They should utilize secondary sources on their tablets. Expectations: On the tablet, go to animoto.com and sign up for an account. Once logged in, click on "create," choose a background style, and click on "create video." Include 12-14 appealing photos of the candidate, at least 6-8 persuasive texts, and some instrumental music. The final slide should include something appealing with the candidate's name. Under the candidate's name, it should state, "Paid for by First Name Last Name/First Name Last Name." The students will insert their names instead of the candidate's name. You also have the option to add logos. Make it as appealing as possible because you are trying to do everything you can to get your candidate elected to be the next US President. The political ad should be one minute long. Once finished, each group should include a one paragraph summary of what their political ad is all about. Once finished, all of the political ads will be played as a web-based product the next day for the class to observe. Students will be graded if they can follow all of these instructions correctly. |
